The Beach Strawberry 'Chaval' (Fragaria chiloensis) is a robust, evergreen groundcover prized for its glossy foliage and its ability to form dense carpets. It is a cultivar of the original coastal strawberry, which is one of the parent species of our modern garden strawberry. 'Chaval' forms dense, low-growing mats of small, glossy, dark green, trifoliate leaves that remain attractive throughout the year. From May to July, inconspicuous, white, cup-shaped flowers with yellow centers also appear. Occasionally, small red ornamental fruits develop, which are edible but primarily not intended for commercial cultivation. In a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained soil, it typically reaches a height of approx. 0.05 - 0.15 m and spreads approx. 0.6 - 2.4 m by runners.

Growth

Beach Strawberry 'Chaval' is a low, creeping, and mat-forming groundcover that spreads via runners (stolons). It typically reaches a height of 0.05 - 0.15 m and spreads approx. 0.6 - 2.4 m wide.

Leaf

The evergreen leaves of Beach Strawberry 'Chaval' are small, trifoliate, glossy dark green, and leathery. They are very densely arranged and retain their color throughout the year.

Flower

The small, cup-shaped flowers appear from May to July. They are white with a yellow center and are rather inconspicuous.

Fruit

Occasionally, small, red, edible ornamental fruits form. They are not the main feature of this cultivar but can add to its attractiveness.

Root

Fragaria chiloensis 'Chaval' is a shallow-rooted plant that forms a dense, fibrous root system and spreads vigorously via above-ground runners.

Location

Preferred location in sunny to semi-shady position. In coastal areas, it tolerates full sun; inland, it prefers partial shade or shade.

Frost hardiness

Beach Strawberry 'Chaval' exhibits good frost hardiness (down to approx. -18°C to -23°C, USDA Zone 6-7).

Soil

Well-drained, sandy or coarse-grained, mineral to humus-rich soil is preferred. It tolerates acidic to neutral pH (pH 5.6 - 7.0). Waterlogging must be strictly avoided. It is tolerant of salty air in coastal proximity.

Use

Ground cover (also as a lawn substitute), banks and slopes (erosion control), rock gardens, riparian planting (not in water), group plantings. It is excellent for low-maintenance, evergreen areas and can tolerate moderate foot traffic.

Water

The plant has a low water requirement. Once established, it is very drought-tolerant, especially in coastal regions. Inland, slightly more irrigation may be necessary, but always ensure good drainage.

Care

Cutting back the foliage (e.g., mowing) in spring can be done to rejuvenate the leaves and promote density. Remove excess runners if spread needs to be limited. Fertilization is generally not necessary, as the plant thrives even in leaner soils.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the ground is frozen or during extreme summer heat (above 30°C). However, the best planting time is spring or autumn.
