The Common fig (Ficus carica) produces brown, yellow-green, purple fruits. They are pear-shaped and have a sweet flavour. Well-drained, loamy, slightly acidic soil and a sunny location create the ideal conditions for a high-yielding harvest from August. Its inconspicuous flowers are a beautiful sight. With its shrub-like growth, the Common fig grows to around 4 metres high and 4 metres wide.

Winter protection is advisable in unprotected areas of the garden.

Ficus carica prefers nutrient-rich, sufficiently moist soil.

Water regularly and allow the soil to dry out in the meantime.

Care

- Fruit trees planted in spring must be watered generously throughout the summer. Well-rooted plants only require additional water in extremely dry conditions.
- This plant also thrives on balconies and terraces. Bright, sheltered locations are ideal. Water twice a day on hot days. Fertilise weekly from June onwards. An irrigation system can make the work easier.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).

- Pruning: In the period from February to March.
