With its dark green leaf colouring, the Balkan blue grass (Sesleria heufleriana) is a decorative design element in the garden, which also stands out with its upright, clump-forming and slender growth. The black flower plumes adorn this grass from spring onwards. It feels most at home in a sunny to semi-shady location with a well-drained, calcareous soil. In favourable conditions, this hardy grass reaches a height of approx. 60 cm and grows up to 40 cm wide.

The wintergreen leaves of the Balkan blue grasss are dark green.

Flower

The black flowers appear from April to June.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

The Balkan blue grass has good frost hardiness.

Use

Group planting, woodland edge

Water

Water regularly and allow the soil to dry out in the meantime.

Care

This plant should not be cut back in autumn, as it looks pretty in winter, or the dead plant parts serve as winter protection. Only prune in spring before new shoots appear.

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the ground is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
