Ornamental grasses are versatile in the garden

A Grass for All Occasions

Ornamental grasses enhance any arrangement in the garden. They get along well with many plants and create a natural atmosphere in late summer and autumn. Take the flat-spike grass (Chasmanthium latifolium), for instance. It's perfectly at home in a cottage garden, showcasing its magnificent spikes from August to October. It looks fantastic with red and yellow coneflowers, and sage completes the combination. Add a ceramic figure, and you have a truly rustic ambiance. Like many ornamental grasses in the garden, the flat-spike grass, with its graceful culms, also likes to be planted in containers. Here, it pairs well with fall asters. And it's also super suitable for dried bouquets!

A Grass with Plenty of Experience

There's a timeless tip for ornamental grasses in the garden from grandma's days: fountain grass (Pennisetum). It requires no effort and is content everywhere. Its fluffy plumes appear in white, red, pink, and violet. It blooms from August to October and makes a great companion in rose beds. It also looks good in containers. Who wouldn't want to use it when looking for a harmonious addition to an autumn bouquet! Furthermore, it also makes a good solitary plant. Planted among light spheres of various sizes, the garden enthusiast has created a splendid eye-catcher. This tip also applies to other ornamental grasses in the garden like panic grass (Panicum), timothy grass (Phleum), and the versatile sedge (Carex).

Small Grass with Big Ornamental Value

Whether tall or small, ornamental grasses are versatile members of the green kingdom. The tall Chinese silvergrass (Miscanthus sinensis) works well as a background, enriching late summer with its impressive feather-like blooms. Smaller grasses, especially in autumn, enhance perennial beds and replace typical summer bloomers. This applies, for example, to the various varieties of blue fescue (Festuca glauca) and golden dewgrass (Pneumatopteris pennigera). They feel at home both in beds and on terraces. The experienced gardener also likes to use these delicate ornamental grasses to create small islands. With their attractive appearance, they are an easy-to-manage decorative element that nevertheless creates a wonderful effect.
