The Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) produces dark blue berries. These are sweet and sour with a fruity flavour. Humus-rich, loose, sandy, acidic, slightly acidic soil and a sunny to semi-shady location create the ideal conditions for a high-yielding harvest from August. Its green-red flowers are a beautiful sight.

Europe to Caucasus.

Growth

Bilberry is an upright and vigorously growing dwarf shrub that can reach a height of 40 - 60 cm and a width of 40 - 60 cm.

Shoots

The shoots of Vaccinium myrtillus are green.

The deciduous leaves of the Bilberry are medium green, lanceolate, alternate. They are about 1 - 2.5 cm in size.

Flower

The green-red, cup-shaped flowers appear from May to June.

Fruit

The dark blue berries have a sweet-sour, fruity flavour. The berries are round. Ripening time from August.

Root

Vaccinium myrtillus is a shallow-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms runner-forming roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

Frost hardiness

The Bilberry has good frost hardiness.

Soil

Vaccinium myrtillus prefers nutrient-rich, sufficiently moist soil.

Use

Cut, heather garden, bog bed, jam, baking, dessert

Water

The plant needs plenty of water. Do not allow the soil to dry out.

Care

Fruit trees planted in spring must be watered abundantly throughout the summer. Well-rooted plants only require additional water in extremely dry conditions.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
