The Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) produces purple-red berries. They have a tart flavour. Humus-rich, sandy, acidic, moist to wet soil and a sunny to semi-shady location create the ideal conditions for a high-yielding harvest from September. Its light pink flowers are a beautiful sight.

Growth

Cranberry is a dwarf shrub with fine shoots and creeping growth that can reach a height of 10 - 30 cm and a width of 50 - 80 cm. It usually grows 30 - 85 cm per year.

The evergreen leaves of the Cranberry are medium green, lanceolate, leathery and alternate. They are about 0.5 - 1.5 cm in size. With its bronze-coloured foliage, it sets beautiful accents in winter.

Flower

The light pink, bell-shaped flowers appear from May to June.

Fruit

The purple-red berries of Vaccinium macrocarpon are particularly decorative. These appear from September.

Root

Vaccinium macrocarpon is a shallow-rooting plant.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

Frost hardiness

The Cranberry has good frost hardiness.

Soil

Vaccinium macrocarpon prefers nutrient-rich, sufficiently moist soil.

Water

The plant needs plenty of water. Do not allow the soil to dry out.

Care

Fruit trees planted in spring must be watered abundantly throughout the summer. Well-rooted plants only require additional water in extremely dry conditions.

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
