The Fly honeysuckle (Lonicera xylosteum) is an upright, branched shrub with decorative, dark red, round fruits. These exude a pleasant fragrance. It produces creamy white, lip-shaped flowers from May to June. The Fly honeysuckle also has egg-shaped, dark green leaves. In a sunny to shady location with well-drained, calcareous, nutrient-rich, loamy soil, it usually reaches a height of approx. 3 metres and grows to a width of approx. 3 metres.

Growth

Fly honeysuckle is an upright and branching shrub. It usually reaches a height of 2 - 3 m and is approx. 2 - 3 m wide. It usually grows 30 - 35 cm per year.

The deciduous leaves of the Fly honeysuckle are dark green, ovate and opposite. They are about 4 - 6 cm in size. Fly honeysuckle turns bright yellow in autumn.

Bark

Grey bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The creamy white, lip-shaped flowers appear from May to June. They are pleasantly fragrant.

Fruit

The dark red, round fruits of Lonicera xylosteum are particularly decorative. These appear from August.

Root

Lonicera xylosteum is a shallow-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms densely branched roots.

Preferred location in a sunny to shady position.

Care
