The Blue-berried honeysuckle (Lonicera caerulea) is an upright, overhanging garden plant with decorative, dark blue fruits. These exude a light fragrance. It produces creamy white, funnel-shaped flowers from April to May. The Blue-berried honeysuckle also has egg-shaped, dark green leaves. In a sunny to semi-shady location with humusy, sandy, loamy soil, it usually reaches a height of approx. 2.5 metres and grows to a width of approx. 2.5 metres.

Blue-berried honeysuckle is upright and overhanging in habit.

Shoots

The shoots of Lonicera caerulea are reddish-brown.

The deciduous leaves of the Blue-berried honeysuckle are dark green, ovate and opposite. They are about 3 - 8 cm in size.

Exfoliating bark.

Flower

The creamy white, funnel-shaped flowers appear from April to May. They grow to about 1 - 2 cm in size and are slightly fragrant.

Fruit

The dark blue berries of Lonicera caerulea are particularly decorative. These appear from August.

Root

Lonicera caerulea is a shallow-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms densely branched roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

Frost hardiness

The Blue-berried honeysuckle has good frost hardiness.

Water

The plant needs plenty of water. Do not allow the soil to dry out.

Care
