Beautiful Woody Plants for Large and Small Home Gardens

A garden thrives on woody plants. Bare lawns following the motto "rectangular and practical," which are only mowed occasionally, may require little work but also offer little joy. Yet there are so many ways to bring colors and shapes into the garden!

From the smallest to the largest garden, gorgeous blossoms lift the mood and make the observer's heart beat with joy. The delicate magnolias, with their large, charming blooms, are an excellent choice. The sensitive Japanese cherry gladly joins them with its Far Eastern beauty. Much hardier are wild roses, which come with a rustic and strikingly clear floral splendor. Always wonderful is every type of lilac, which caters to the aesthetic of romantics. Both Kolkwitzia and Viburnum are adaptable and elegant.

When autumn arrives, it's the leaves' grand entrance. The dogwood shines with brilliant red, always the most striking color this season. This is also demonstrated by the resilient fire maple, whose radiance is almost unsurpassed. The wild rose makes a second impressive appearance, with rose hips that are an indispensable part of the autumnal garden scene. The firethorn also shows its fantastic side now, with orange fruits. The beautyberry bush appears delicate and lovely. Its berries, in glistening purple, remain on the branches for a long time because they are disdained by birds.

Even winter doesn't have to remain colorless. A unique world of blossoms unfolds in the coldest season. Yellow and red witch hazel plants, ideally intertwined, are a fairytale sight in the now bare scenery. The same goes for the fragrant viburnum, which playfully bridges the time until the first spring bloomers. Also atmospheric is the winter jasmine, which appears for months with countless small, yellow flowers.

Do you have a garden with a focus on naturalness? Not so many highly cultivated roses, but rather some wild botany? Then sea buckthorn and hawthorn are just right for you. You'll also enjoy the beautifully feathered rowan and the easy-to-care-for elderberry. With both, you can choose whether to leave the berry harvest to the birds that stay at home or process them yourself. Jams and jellies await!

What's available for lovers of exotic garden design? Here, the Asian contribution to the plant world is particularly welcome. First and foremost, the Japanese maple is a knockout. There are so many varieties, and all are impressive. Everyone can find something suitable here. Closely following is the Chinese flowering dogwood with its charming foliage and a sea of spherical blossoms. It becomes more beautiful with each passing year. Tree peonies always promise generous and lush blooms. They combine vibrant colors with delicate yet voluminous forms.

Connoisseurs also get their money's worth. A sweet cherry tree as a solitary specimen is unsurpassed. From its idyllic blossoms to its ripe fruit, it's a joy for every garden owner. If you like apples, you can opt for espalier fruit if space is limited. Sweet raspberries for snacking directly from the bush and tart currants for processing into desserts or cakes are further highlights.

Last but not least, individualists with a penchant for the truly special should also get their turn. Rare woody plants usually hold a great attraction for garden enthusiasts. In spring, the snowbell tree delights with delicate blossoms of innocent white. In summer, the sweetshrub comes into its own with its intensely fragrant bark. Things get bizarre with the trifoliate orange, which is recommended as an extravagant solitaire. Finally, there are storax plants, which remain highly attractive even after flowering because their circular fruits look like jade pearls. One last tip is for aroma fanatics: the three-leafed hop tree is one of the most intensely fragrant large shrubs.
