The Winter honeysuckle (Lonicera purpusii) is a dense, branched shrub with decorative, red, round fruits. These exude a strong fragrance. It produces creamy white, lip-shaped flowers from December to March. The Winter honeysuckle also has lanceolate, dark green leaves. In a semi-shady location, it usually reaches a height of around 2 metres and grows to around 3 metres wide. The Winter honeysuckle makes no particular demands on the soil.

Growth

Winter honeysuckle is a dense and branching shrub. It usually reaches a height of 1.5 - 2 m and is approx. 2 - 3 m wide. It usually grows 20 - 30 cm per year.

The wintergreen leaves of the Winter honeysuckle are dark green, lanceolate and opposite. They are about 5 - 8 cm in size.

Bark

Brown, striped, torn bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The creamy white, lip-shaped flowers appear from December to March. They grow to about 3 - 4 cm and are strongly scented.

Fruit

The red, round fruits of Lonicera purpusii are particularly decorative.

Location

Preferred location in partial shade.
