The Amur Honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii) is an upright, umbrella-shaped large shrub with decorative, red, round fruits. These exude a strong fragrance. It produces creamy white, tubular flowers from May to June. The Amur Honeysuckle also has egg-shaped, dark green leaves. In a sunny to semi-shady location, it usually reaches a height of around 5 metres and grows to a width of around 5 metres. The Amur Honeysuckle makes no particular demands on the soil.

Growth

Amur Honeysuckle is an upright and umbrella-shaped large shrub. It usually reaches a height of 4 - 5 m and is approx. 4 - 5 m wide. It usually grows 30 - 35 cm per year.

The deciduous leaves of the Amur Honeysuckle are dark green, ovate and opposite. They are about 5 - 8 cm in size.

Bark

Grey, striped, torn bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The creamy white, tubular flowers appear from May to June. They are strongly scented.

Fruit

The red, round fruits of Lonicera maackii are particularly decorative. These appear from August.

Root

Lonicera maackii is a heartroot.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

The Amur Honeysuckle has good frost hardiness.

Care

- A slow-release fertiliser can be used in spring. This releases the nutrients slowly and continuously so that the plant is evenly supplied over a longer period of time.
- This plant does not tolerate heavy soil. If necessary, the soil structure can be improved when planting by working in sand and mature compost.

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
