The Small-flowered magnolia (Magnolia sieboldii) is a loose, funnel-shaped large shrub with decorative, red, elongated fruits. These exude a pleasant fragrance. It produces white, cup-shaped flowers from June to July. The Small-flowered magnolia also has egg-shaped, blue-green leaves. In a semi-shady, wind-protected location with humus-rich, loose, nutrient-rich soil, it usually reaches a height of around 6 metres and is around 4 metres wide.

The deciduous leaves of Small-flowered magnolia are blue-green, ovate, with entire margins. They are about 10 - 15 cm tall. Small-flowered magnolia turns bright yellow in autumn.

Bark

Grey bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The white, cupped flowers appear from June to July. They grow to around 8 - 10 cm and are pleasantly fragrant.

Fruit

The red, elongated fruits of Magnolia sieboldii are particularly decorative. These appear from September.

Root

Magnolia sieboldii is a shallow-rooting plant.

Location

Preferred location in partial shade, sheltered from the wind.

Frost hardiness

The Small-flowered magnolia has good frost hardiness.

Water

The plant needs plenty of water. Do not allow the soil to dry out.

Care

- This plant should not be pruned. Only broken or diseased branches should be removed in summer.
- Freshly planted, young plants require winter protection in the event of heavy frosts.
- This plant should only be watered with lime-free water. Rainwater is particularly suitable for this purpose.

Pruning

No pruning is necessary for this plant.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
