Gardening tasks in May.

Once the Ice Saints have passed, even frost-sensitive summer flowers can finally go outdoors! As a result, May is usually one of the busiest months of the gardening year. Even those who "only" decorate their entrance beautifully or call a small front garden their own have plenty to do now. But after the long and cold wait, many plant lovers are already looking forward to finally rolling up their sleeves.

Where should you begin?

The lawn needs mowing, the flower beds need digging and planting, the garden furniture wants to go outside – where should you even start? A good tip is to work your way forward from the terrace. Those who had already planted pots and bowls here in the spring mostly opted for pansies, primroses, and other colorful flowering plants. These are often still very beautiful in May, and it's no pleasure to tear them out. If you have space, you don't need to dispose of them; instead, you can plant them in your garden. They will look lovely in beds for a long time, and with a bit of luck, the seeds will fall out and produce new plants for the following year. This solves two questions at once, and the redesign of the terrace is as assured as the initial planting of the beds. For those who acquired tulip bulbs in the spring, there's a special piece of advice: even if the heads have already withered, the foliage should only be cut back when the above-ground parts of the plant have completely lost their color. Because as long as fresh green still shines, the underground bulb can still gather energy reserves for the next season.

The early perennials are blooming.

After the spring bloomers, the first perennials are now blossoming. Several rock garden cushions and peonies, as well as some early bedding roses and irises, are among the early-flowering perennials. The broom is also already forming buds, and the magnificent lilac is unfolding its fragrant attire. So May is not just the time for gardening work, but also the time to enjoy the first seas of blossoms.
