What Kind of Work Does April Bring for the Gardener?

April is a spring month, and as such, it brings a lot of work to the garden. What needs to be done, and what can be done, really depends on the weather and whether winter has just passed or if early bloomers have been awake since February.

What Needs Doing

Normally, when the soil has already warmed up but the last frosts might still occur, summer flowers and vegetables are sown, pricked out, and also planted. Before this, the soil needs to be prepared for sowing.

What Can You Sow with Little Effort?

Some plants almost always thrive; you just need to sow them in spring and harvest them later. Pumpkins belong to this group and are planted now. However, there are indeed fruits that you can harvest in the garden right now: for example, hardy arugula. Also ready for harvest from mid-March is wild garlic (Bärlauch). You can easily grow this in the dappled shade of large, old trees. It then disappears at the end of May until the next year.

Trees and Shrubs in April

April is the month when we can calmly dedicate ourselves to the bushes and trees once more. This involves mulching around the base of trees and shaping plants like boxwood. Heather plants also need to be pruned now.

In warm years, the forsythia will have already finished blooming. When this happens, it needs to be pruned. Every three to four years, you should remove a third of the old, woody shoots. This encourages the growth of new shoots.

The hanging pussy willows also need to be pruned now. Their long shoots are cut back to allow new ones to form throughout the year.

Pruning Ornamental Shrubs in Spring

All those shrubs that bloom in autumn and winter should be pruned in spring. This includes, for example, the butterfly bush, which can even be cut back to half a meter above the ground. Others, like the rose mallow, are only thinned out.

If you want to plant deciduous trees and conifers, now is the time to do it, especially if they are not in containers. Once tulips have finished blooming, the remnants of the plant must be cut off. This is the only way to prevent seed formation and direct energy back into the bulb. Only wild tulips are an exception, as they are meant to propagate through their dropped seeds.
