The Common barberry (Berberis vulgaris) is a spreading, dense shrub that produces yellow flowers with a pleasant fragrance. They appear in May. These produce dark red fruits from September. They exude a pleasant fragrance. The Common barberry also has egg-shaped, medium green leaves. Its bark is grey. In a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, humus-rich, calcareous soil, it usually reaches a height of around 3 metres and grows to around 3 metres wide.

Growth

Common barberry is a spreading and densely growing shrub. It usually reaches a height of 2 - 3 m and is approx. 2 - 3 m wide. It usually grows 30 - 40 cm per year.

Shoots

The shoots of Berberis vulgaris are spiny.

Leaves

The deciduous leaves of the Common barberry are medium green, ovate and alternate. Common barberry turns bright orange-red in autumn.

Bark

Grey bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The yellow flowers appear in May. These are pleasantly fragrant.

Fruit

Berberis vulgaris forms dark red fruits with a sweet and sour flavour. Ripening time from September.

Root

Berberis vulgaris is a shallow-rooted plant and, depending on the soil, forms finely branched, runner-forming roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.
