The Spike witch hazel (Corylopsis spicata) is an irregular shrub that produces light yellow flowers arranged in spikes with a pleasant fragrance. They appear from April to May. The Spike witch hazel also has matt, heart-shaped, blue-green leaves. The purple-red shoots are also an interesting sight. In a sunny, sheltered location with well-drained, weakly acidic soil, it usually reaches a height of around 3 metres and grows to a width of around 3 metres.

Growth

Spike witch hazel is an irregularly growing shrub with a loose crown. It usually reaches a height of 2 - 3 m and is approx. 2 - 3 m wide.

Shoots

The shoots of Corylopsis spicata are twisted.

The deciduous leaves of the Spike witch hazel are blue-green, heart-shaped, matt, alternate. They are about 5 - 10 cm in size. Purple-red, early shoots. Spike witch hazel turns bright orange in autumn.

Flower

The light yellow flowers of Spike witch hazel appear in spikes from April to May. These are pleasantly fragrant.

Root

Corylopsis spicata is a shallow-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms finely branched roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny, sheltered position.

The Spike witch hazel has good frost hardiness.
