The Shallon (Gaultheria shallon) is a dense small shrub with decorative, black-red, round fruits. It produces pink-coloured, bell-shaped flowers arranged in clusters from May to June. The Shallon also has leathery, egg-shaped, dark green leaves. In a semi-shady location with humus-rich, lime-free, acidic, moist to wet, weakly acidic soil, it usually reaches a height of approx. 80 cm and is approx. 1 m wide.

Shallon is a densely growing small shrub. It usually reaches a height of 40 - 80 cm and is approx. 0.8 - 1 m wide.

High leaf ornamental value. The evergreen leaves of the Shallon are dark green, ovate, leathery, alternate, serrated. They are about 5 - 10 cm in size.

Flower

The pink, bell-shaped flowers of the Shallon appear in clusters from May to June.

Fruit

The black-red, round fruits of Gaultheria shallon are particularly decorative. These appear from September.

Root

Gaultheria shallon is a shallow-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms densely branched, runner-forming roots.

Location

Preferred location in partial shade.

The Shallon has good frost hardiness.

Soil

Gaultheria shallon thrives in all acidic, humus-rich and sufficiently moist soils.

The plant needs plenty of water. Do not allow the soil to dry out.

Care

Excess water must be able to drain away easily, waterlogging should be avoided at all costs.
