The Mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) is an upright, broad shrub that produces pink, cupped flowers arranged in umbels. They appear from May to June. The Mountain laurel also has shiny, lanceolate, dark green leaves. In a sunny to semi-shady location with humus-rich, acidic soil, it usually reaches a height of around 3 metres and grows to around 3 metres wide.

Mountain laurel is an upright and broad-growing shrub. It usually reaches a height of 1.5 - 3 m and is approx. 1.5 - 3 m wide.

The evergreen leaves of the Mountain laurel are dark green, lanceolate, glossy, alternate, with entire margins. They are about 8 - 10 cm tall.

Flower

The pink-coloured, cupped flowers of the Mountain laurel appear in corymbs from May to June.

Root

Kalmia latifolia is a shallow-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms finely branched roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

Frost hardiness

The Mountain laurel has good frost hardiness.

Soil

Kalmia latifolia thrives on all acidic, humus-rich and sufficiently moist soils.

Solitary, group planting, ornamental shrub, bog border

Water

The plant needs plenty of water. Do not allow the soil to dry out.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
