The Rough-leaved hydrangea (Hydrangea aspera) is an upright, loose shrub that produces purple flowers arranged in panicles. They appear from the end of July to mid-September. The Rough-leaved hydrangea also has hairy, egg-shaped, dark green leaves. In a semi-shady, wind-protected location with well-drained, humus-rich, acidic soil, it usually reaches a height of around 3.5 metres and grows to a width of around 3.5 metres.

Growth

Rough-leaved hydrangea is an upright and loose-growing shrub. It usually reaches a height of 2.5 - 3.5 m and is approx. 2.5 - 3.5 m wide. Slow-growing.

The deciduous leaves of Rough-leaved hydrangea are dark green, ovate, hairy, opposite, with entire margins.

Flower

The purple flowers of the Rough-leaved hydrangea appear in panicles from the end of July to mid-September. These grow to about 15 - 30 cm tall.

Stoloniferous, sparsely branched.

Location

Preferred location in partial shade, sheltered from the wind.

Frost hardiness

The Rough-leaved hydrangea has good frost hardiness.
