The Spindle (Euonymus europaeus) is a sprawling, loose, large shrub with decorative, pink-red fruits. It produces greenish-yellow flowers from May to June. The Spindle also has lanceolate, dark green leaves. In a sunny to semi-shady location with calcareous, nutrient-rich, moist to wet soil, it usually reaches a height of around 6 metres and grows to a width of around 5 metres.

Growth

Spindle is a sprawling and loosely growing large shrub. It usually reaches a height of 2 - 6 m and is approx. 2 - 5 m wide. It usually grows 20 - 25 cm per year.

Shoots

The shoots of Euonymus europaeus are smooth.

The deciduous leaves of the Spindles are dark green, lanceolate, opposite and serrated. They are about 6 - 8 cm in size. Spindle turns a bright scarlet red in autumn.

Smooth bark.

Flower

The greenish-yellow flowers appear from May to June.

Fruit

The pink-red fruits of Euonymus europaeus are particularly decorative. These appear from August.

Root

Euonymus europaeus is a heartroot and, depending on the soil, forms roots close to the surface.

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

The Spindle has good frost hardiness.
