The Oak-leaved hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia) is a bushy, broad shrub that produces white, later pink-coloured flowers arranged in panicles with a light fragrance. They appear from June to August. The Oak-leaved hydrangea also has egg-shaped, dark green leaves. Its bark is light brown in colour. In a sunny to semi-shady, wind-protected location with well-drained, humus-rich, lime-free soil, it usually reaches a height of around 2 metres and grows to around 2 metres wide.

Growth

Oak-leaved hydrangea is a bushy and broad-growing shrub. It usually reaches a height of 1.5 - 2 m and is approx. 1.5 - 2 m wide. It usually grows 20 - 25 cm per year.

The deciduous leaves of Oak-leaved hydrangea are dark green, ovate, opposite and lobed. Oak-leaved hydrangea turns bright purple-red in autumn.

Bark

Light brown bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The white, later pink-coloured flowers of the Oak-leaved hydrangea appear in panicles from June to August. They grow to about 10 - 20 cm and are slightly fragrant.

Root

Hydrangea quercifolia is a shallow-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms runner-forming roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady, wind-protected position.

The Oak-leaved hydrangea has good frost hardiness.
