The Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas) is a bushy, upright, broad, large shrub with decorative, red, oval fruits. These exude a light fragrance. It produces golden yellow flowers arranged in umbels from March to April. The Cornelian cherry also has egg-shaped, medium-green leaves. In a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, humus-rich, calcareous, loamy soil, it usually reaches a height of around 7 metres and grows to around 6 metres wide.

The shoots of Cornus mas are grey-green.

The deciduous leaves of Cornelian cherry are medium green, ovate, opposite, wavy. They are about 4 - 10 cm in size. Cornelian cherry turns bright orange-yellow in autumn.

Bark

Red-brown, flaking, scale-like bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The golden yellow flowers of Cornelian cherry appear in umbels from March to April. They are slightly fragrant.

Fruit

The red, oval drupes of Cornus mas are particularly decorative. These appear from August.

Root

Cornus mas is a heartroot and, depending on the soil, forms densely branched roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

Frost hardiness

The Cornelian cherry has good frost hardiness.

Care

This plant does not tolerate heavy soil. If necessary, the soil structure can be improved when planting by working in sand and mature compost.
