The Chinese dogwood (Cornus kousa chinensis) is an upright, overhanging large shrub with decorative, pink-red fruits. It produces white flowers arranged in umbels from the end of May to June. The Chinese dogwood also has egg-shaped, medium-green leaves. In a sunny to semi-shady location with loose, acidic soil, it usually reaches a height of around 10 metres and is around 8 metres wide.

The deciduous leaves of the Chinese dogwoods are medium green, ovate, opposite, with entire margins. They are about 8 - 12 cm tall. Chinese dogwood turns a bright scarlet red in autumn.

Flower

The white flowers of Chinese dogwood appear in umbels from the end of May to June. These grow to about 8 - 10 cm in size.

Fruit

The pink berries of Cornus kousa chinensis are particularly decorative. These appear from September.

Root

Cornus kousa chinensis is a shallow-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms finely branched roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

Frost hardiness

The Chinese dogwood has good frost hardiness.

Cornus kousa chinensis thrives on all acidic, humus-rich and sufficiently moist soils.
