The Common ash (Fraxinus excelsior) is a large, roundish tree with decorative, brown winged fruits that remain on the tree for a very long time. It produces yellow-red flowers arranged in panicles from April to May. The Common ash also has lanceolate, pinnate, medium-green leaves. In a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, humus-rich, calcareous, nutrient-rich soil, it usually reaches a height of around 35 metres and grows to a width of around 15 metres.

The deciduous leaves of the Common ash are medium green, lanceolate, pinnate and opposite. They are about 5 - 12 cm in size. Common ash turns bright yellow in autumn.

Bark

Grey, smooth bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The yellow-red flowers of Common ash appear in panicles from April to May.

Fruit

The brown fruits of Fraxinus excelsior are particularly decorative. These appear from September. Adhere for a very long time.

Root

Fraxinus excelsior is a taproot and, depending on the soil, forms spreading, branched roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

The Common ash has good frost hardiness.

Care

- Excess water must be able to drain off easily; waterlogging should be avoided at all costs.
- Cut and saw wounds as well as broken branches should be treated with a wound sealant as soon as possible to prevent pathogens from entering the plant.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
