The Kousa (Cornus kousa) is an upright, spreading large shrub with decorative, pink-red, round fruits. It produces creamy white flowers from the end of May to June. The Kousa also has egg-shaped, dark green leaves. In a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, humus-rich, lime-free, sandy soil, it usually grows to a height of around 6 metres and is around 5 metres wide.

The deciduous leaves of the Kousas are dark green, ovate, opposite, wavy. They are about 8 - 9 cm in size. Kousa turns a bright scarlet red in autumn.

Flower

The creamy white flowers appear from the end of May to June. These grow to about 8 - 9 cm in size.

Fruit

The pink-red, round berries of Cornus kousa are particularly decorative. These appear from September.

Root

Cornus kousa is a shallow-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms finely branched roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

Frost hardiness

The Kousa has good frost hardiness.
