The Mezereon (Daphne mezereum) is an upright small shrub with decorative, red fruits. These exude a strong fragrance. It produces pink-coloured flowers from March to April. The Mezereon also has lanceolate, medium green leaves. In a semi-shady, wind-protected location with calcareous, loamy soil, it usually reaches a height of around 1.5 metres and is around 1.5 metres wide.

Growth

Mezereon is an upright growing small shrub. It usually reaches a height of 1 - 1.5 m and is approx. 0.8 - 1.5 m wide.

Shoots

The shoots of Daphne mezereum are grey-green.

The deciduous leaves of the Mezereons are medium green, lanceolate, alternate. They are about 6 - 8 cm in size. Mezereon turns bright yellow in autumn.

Flower

The pink-coloured flowers appear from March to April. They are strongly scented.

Fruit

The red drupes of Daphne mezereum are particularly decorative. These appear from June.

Root

Daphne mezereum is a deep-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms sparsely branched roots.

Location

Preferred location in partial shade, sheltered from the wind.
