The Everbearing Wild Strawberry (Fragaria, often associated with Fragaria vesca var. semperflorens) is a charming, continuously flowering and fruiting strawberry cultivar. It's valued for its consistent yield of small, aromatic fruits and its compact growth habit, producing few runners compared to garden strawberries.

Growth

Monatserdbeere cultivars generally grow in a compact, clump-forming habit and produce very few runners compared to garden strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa). They typically reach a height of about 0.15 - 0.25 m (6-10 inches) and a width of 0.2 - 0.3 m (8-12 inches).

Leaf

The leaves are evergreen, light to medium green, trifoliate, and serrated. They form an attractive, dense foliage cover.

Flower

Small, inconspicuous white flowers appear continuously from May until the first frost.

Fruit

The fruits are small, conical, and bright red, possessing an intense, sweet, aromatic wild strawberry flavor. As everbearing varieties, they appear throughout the summer.

Root

Monatserdbeeren are shallow-rooted plants that form a dense, fibrous root system.

Location

Prefers sunny to partial shade locations. Full sun promotes fruit production and aroma.

Frost hardiness

Monatserdbeeren are very frost-hardy.

Soil

Humus-rich, well-drained, fresh to moist, and nutrient-rich soil is ideal (pH 5.5 - 6.5). Waterlogging must be strictly avoided.

Use

Excellent as groundcover, edging for beds and paths, in containers, balcony boxes, raised beds, or cottage gardens. They are perfect as a snack plant for children and for fresh consumption directly from the garden.

Water

The plant has a medium water requirement. The soil should always be kept moist but not waterlogged, especially during fruit development.

Care

Pruning the foliage in late autumn or early spring can promote vitality. Fertilization with compost or a balanced berry fertilizer in spring is recommended to support continuous fruiting.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the ground is frozen or during extreme heat. The best planting time is spring or autumn.
