The Mountain witch alder (Fothergilla major) is a bushy, upright shrub that produces white flowers arranged in spikes with a strong fragrance. They appear in May. Green capsules emerge from these. They exude a strong fragrance. The Mountain witch alder also has egg-shaped, medium green leaves. In a sunny to semi-shady, wind-protected location with humusy, sandy, acidic soil, it usually reaches a height of around 3 metres and grows to around 2 metres wide.

Growth

Mountain witch alder is a bushy and upright growing shrub. It usually reaches a height of 1.5 - 3 m and is approx. 1.5 - 2 m wide. It usually grows 15 - 20 cm per year.

The deciduous leaves of the Mountain witch alders are medium green, ovate and alternate. They are about 5 - 10 cm in size. Mountain witch alder turns bright orange-red in autumn.

Flower

The white flowers of Mountain witch alder appear in spikes in May. These grow to around 2 - 5 cm and are strongly scented.

Root

Fothergilla major is a heartroot and, depending on the soil, forms finely branched roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady, wind-protected position.

The Mountain witch alder has good frost hardiness.
