The Allegheny serviceberry (Amelanchier laevis) is a loose, picturesque large shrub that produces white flowers arranged in clusters. They appear from April to May. These produce black, round fruits from September. The Allegheny serviceberry also has egg-shaped, blue-green leaves. The bronze-coloured shoots are also an interesting sight. In a sunny to semi-shady location, it usually reaches a height of around 6 metres and grows to around 6 metres wide. The Allegheny serviceberry makes no particular demands on the soil.

Growth

Allegheny serviceberry is a loosely growing, picturesque large shrub. It usually reaches a height of 3 - 6 m and is approx. 3 - 6 m wide. It usually grows 15 - 20 cm per year.

Leaves

The deciduous leaves of the Allegheny serviceberry are blue-green, ovate and alternate. They are about 3 - 7 cm in size. Bronze-coloured shoots. Allegheny serviceberry turns bright orange-red in autumn.

Flower

The white flowers of Allegheny serviceberry appear in clusters from April to May.

Fruit

The black berries The berries are round. Ripen from September.

Root

Amelanchier laevis is a shallow-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms densely branched roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

The Allegheny serviceberry has good frost hardiness.
