The Bladder senna (Colutea arborescens) is an upright, broad shrub with decorative, red-brown, elongated pods. It produces yellow, butterfly-shaped flowers arranged in clusters from May to October. The Bladder senna also has pinnate, medium green leaves. In a sunny location with calcareous, sandy soil, it usually reaches a height of around 4 metres and grows to around 4 metres wide.

Growth

Bladder senna is an upright and broad-growing shrub. It usually reaches a height of 2 - 4 m and is approx. 2 - 4 m wide.

Shoots

The shoots of Colutea arborescens are grey-green.

The deciduous leaves of the Bladder sennas are medium green, pinnate and alternate. They are about 7 - 10 cm in size.

Bark

Dark grey bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The yellow, butterfly-shaped flowers of the Bladder senna appear in clusters from May to October.

Fruit

The red-brown, elongated fruits of Colutea arborescens are particularly decorative. These appear from August.

Root

Colutea arborescens is a deep-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms extensive branching roots.
