The Choke cherry 'Shubert' (Prunus virginiana) is a dense, ovoid small tree with decorative, purple-red, round fruits. It produces white, cupped flowers arranged in clusters in May. The Choke cherry 'Shubert' also bears egg-shaped, purple-red leaves. The light green shoots are also an interesting sight. In a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, loamy soil, it usually reaches a height of around 8 metres and grows to a width of around 7 metres.

Growth

Choke cherry 'Shubert' is a dense and ovoid growing small tree. It usually reaches a height of 5 - 8 m and is approx. 5 - 7 m wide. Slow growing.

Leaves

High leaf ornamental value. The deciduous leaves of the Choke cherry 'Shubert' are purple-red, ovate, alternate. Light green shoots. Choke cherry 'Shubert' turns bright dark red in autumn. Long lasting.

Bark

Dark grey bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The white, cupped flowers of Choke cherry 'Shubert' appear in clusters in May.

Fruit

The purple-red, round drupes of Prunus virginiana 'Shubert' are particularly decorative. These appear from August.

Root

Prunus virginiana 'Shubert' is a deep-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms extensive branching roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.
