The Laurustinus (Viburnum tinus) is an upright, broad shrub with decorative, blue-grey, oval fruits. These exude a light fragrance. It produces light pink-white flowers arranged in umbrella clusters from March to April. With the right care, the Laurustinus will flower again in November. The Laurustinus also has shiny, lanceolate, dark green leaves. In a sunny to semi-shady, wind-protected location with well-drained, humus-rich soil, it usually reaches a height of around 4 metres and grows to around 4 metres wide.

North America to southern Europe.

Growth

Laurustinus is an upright and spreading shrub. It usually reaches a height of 1.5 - 4 m and is approx. 1.5 - 4 m wide. It usually grows 20 - 40 cm per year.

The evergreen leaves of the Laurustinus are dark green, lanceolate, glossy and opposite. They are about 3 - 10 cm in size.

Flower

The light pink-white flowers of the Laurustinus appear in umbrella clusters from March to April. These are slightly fragrant. With the right care, re-flowering in November.

Fruit

The blue-grey, oval fruits of Viburnum tinus are particularly decorative. These appear from August.

Root

Viburnum tinus is a shallow-rooting plant.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady, wind-protected position.

Frost hardiness

Winter protection is advisable in unprotected areas of the garden.

The plant has a medium water requirement.

Care

- A slow-release fertiliser can be used in spring. This releases the nutrients slowly and continuously so that the plant is evenly supplied over a longer period of time.
- Watering less frequently, but thoroughly and thoroughly, encourages the plant roots to penetrate deeper into the soil. This helps the plant to survive periods of drought.
- Heavy pruning in spring encourages flowering.

Pruning

Pruning, ideally from March to June, is advisable for this plant.
