The Guelder rose 'Compactum' (Viburnum opulus) is a compact, roundish small shrub with decorative, light red fruits that remain on the tree for a very long time. It produces white flowers arranged in umbrella clusters from May to June. The Guelder rose 'Compactum' also has roundish, light green leaves. In a sunny to semi-shady location with calcareous, nutrient-rich, moist to wet soil, it usually reaches a height of around 1.5 metres and grows to around 2 metres wide.

Growth

Guelder rose 'Compactum' is a compact and rounded small shrub. It usually reaches a height of 1 - 1.5 m and is approx. 1 - 2 m wide. Slow growing. It usually grows 30 - 70 cm per year.

The deciduous leaves of the Guelder rose 'Compactum's are light green, roundish, opposite and lobed. They are about 8 - 12 cm in size. Guelder rose 'Compactum' is bright orange-red to bordeaux red in autumn.

Flower

The white flowers of Guelder rose 'Compactum' appear in umbrella clusters from May to June.

Fruit

The light red drupes of Viburnum opulus 'Compactum' are particularly decorative. These appear from September and are very long-lasting.

Root

Viburnum opulus 'Compactum' is a shallow-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms densely branched, runner-forming roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

Care

- A slow-release fertiliser can be used in spring. This releases the nutrients slowly and continuously so that the plant is evenly supplied over a longer period of time.
- Watering less frequently, but thoroughly and thoroughly, encourages the plant roots to penetrate deeper into the soil. This helps the plant to survive periods of drought.
- To increase vigour and flowering, the plant should be cut back a hand's breadth above the ground every 3-5 years.

Pruning

It is advisable to prune this plant from the end of June to the beginning of July.
