The European white elm (Ulmus laevis) is a broad, ovoid large tree that produces purple-red flowers arranged in umbels. They appear from March to April. Green-brown winged fruits emerge from these from June. The European white elm also has medium green leaves. Its bark is dark brown and longitudinally furrowed. In a sunny to semi-shady location with loose, nutrient-rich, moist to wet soil, it usually reaches a height of approx. 35 metres and grows to a width of approx. 25 metres.

Eastern Europe to Central Europe.

Growth

European white elm is a broad and ovoid growing large tree with a translucent, loose crown. It usually reaches a height of 15 - 35 m and is approx. 10 - 25 m wide. As a rule, it grows 40 - 50 cm per year.

Shoots

The shoots of Ulmus laevis are olive green.

The deciduous leaves of the European white elm are medium green, alternate, double serrated. They are about 10 - 12 cm in size. European white elm turns bright yellow in autumn.

Bark

Dark brown, longitudinally furrowed bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The purple-red flowers of European white elm appear in umbels from March to April.

Root

Ulmus laevis is a deep-rooter and, depending on the soil, forms runner-forming roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

The plant needs plenty of water. Do not allow the soil to dry out.

Care

A slow-release fertiliser can be used in spring. This releases the nutrients slowly and continuously so that the plant is evenly supplied over a longer period of time.

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
