The Holm oak (Quercus ilex) is a spherical small tree with decorative, grey-green, oval fruits. It produces creamy white flowers arranged in catkins from April to May. The Holm oak also has leathery, egg-shaped, dark green leaves. In a sunny, sheltered location with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil, it usually reaches a height of around 12 metres and grows to a width of around 9 metres.

The shoots of Quercus ilex are tomentose, grey.

The evergreen leaves of Holm oak are dark green, ovate, leathery, alternate, toothed. They are about 3 - 7 cm in size.

Bark

Dark grey, fielded bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The creamy white flowers of the Holm oak appear in catkins from April to May.

Fruit

The grey-green, oval fruits of Quercus ilex are particularly decorative.

Quercus ilex is a deep-rooting plant.

Preferred location in a sunny, sheltered position.
