The Black elder 'Haschberg' (Sambucus nigra) is a broad, loose, large shrub that produces creamy white flowers arranged in umbrella clusters with a light fragrance. They appear from June to July. They produce black, round fruits from mid-September. They are large and exude a light fragrance. The Black elder 'Haschberg' also has pinnate, dark green leaves. Its bark is grey, corky and longitudinally furrowed. In a sunny to semi-shady location with humusy, calcareous, loamy soil, it usually reaches a height of around 5 metres and grows to around 4 metres wide.

Growth

Black elder 'Haschberg' is a broad and loose-growing large shrub. It usually reaches a height of 4 - 5 m and is approx. 3 - 4 m wide. It usually grows 40 - 60 cm per year.

The deciduous leaves of the Black elder 'Haschberg' are dark green, pinnate and opposite. Black elder 'Haschberg' turns bright yellow in autumn. Long lasting.

Bark

Grey, corky, longitudinally furrowed bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

The black, large drupes have an aromatic flavour. The purple flesh of these round drupes is medium firm and juicy. Ripen from mid-September.
