The Amur corktree (Phellodendron amurense) is a broad, picturesque small tree that produces greenish-yellow flowers arranged in panicles. They appear in June. These produce black, round fruits. The Amur corktree also has pinnate, dark green leaves. In a sunny location with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil, it usually reaches a height of around 15 metres and grows to a width of around 15 metres.

The deciduous leaves of the Amur corktrees are dark green, pinnate and opposite. They are about 9 - 13 cm in size. Amur corktree is bright golden yellow in autumn.

Corky, longitudinally furrowed bark.

Flower

The greenish-yellow flowers of the Amur corktree appear in panicles in June. These grow to about 10 - 12 cm tall.

Root

Phellodendron amurense is a shallow-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms spreading, branching roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny position.

The Amur corktree has good frost hardiness.

Care

- Cut and saw wounds as well as broken branches should be treated with a wound sealant as soon as possible to prevent pathogens from entering the plant.
- A slow-release fertiliser can be used in spring. This releases the nutrients slowly and continuously so that the plant is evenly supplied over a longer period of time.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
