The Persian ironwood (Parrotia persica) is a broad, multi-stemmed large shrub that produces orange-red, star-shaped flowers. They appear from March to April. These produce green-brown capsules. The Persian ironwood also has leathery, roundish, medium-green leaves. The green-red shoots are also an interesting sight. Its bark is dark brown and flaking. In a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, loamy soil, it usually reaches a height of approx. 10 metres and grows to a width of approx. 10 metres.
