The Persian ironwood (Parrotia persica) is a broad, multi-stemmed large shrub that produces orange-red, star-shaped flowers. They appear from March to April. These produce green-brown capsules. The Persian ironwood also has leathery, roundish, medium-green leaves. The green-red shoots are also an interesting sight. Its bark is dark brown and flaking. In a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, loamy soil, it usually reaches a height of approx. 10 metres and grows to a width of approx. 10 metres.

The deciduous leaves of the Persian ironwoods are medium green, roundish, leathery, alternate. They are about 8 - 10 cm tall. Green-red shoots. Persian ironwood turns bright orange in autumn.

Bark

Dark brown, flaking bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The orange-red, star-shaped flowers appear from March to April.

Root

Parrotia persica is a shallow-rooting plant.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

The Persian ironwood has good frost hardiness.

Care

- Cuts, saw cuts and broken branches should be treated with a wound sealant as soon as possible to prevent pathogens from entering the plant.
- Watering less frequently, but thoroughly and thoroughly, encourages the plant roots to penetrate deeper into the soil. This enables the plant to survive dry periods better.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
