The Peking willow 'Tortuosa' (Salix matsudana) is an upright, slender large shrub that produces silvery-white flowers arranged in catkins. They appear from March to April. The Peking willow 'Tortuosa' also has lanceolate, twisted, medium green leaves. In a sunny location with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil, it usually reaches a height of around 8 metres and grows to a width of around 3.5 metres.

Growth

Peking willow 'Tortuosa' is an upright and slender growing large shrub. It usually reaches a height of 4 - 8 m and is approx. 2.5 - 3.5 m wide. Rapidly growing. Usually grows 30 - 60 cm per year.

Shoots

The shoots of Salix matsudana 'Tortuosa' are twisted, olive green in colour.

The deciduous leaves of Peking willow 'Tortuosa' are medium green, lanceolate, twisted, alternate. They are about 5 - 10 cm in size. Peking willow 'Tortuosa' is bright yellow in autumn.

Flower

The silvery-white flowers of Peking willow 'Tortuosa' appear in catkins from March to April. These grow to around 1.5 - 2.5 cm in size.

Root

Salix matsudana 'Tortuosa' is a shallow-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms densely branched roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny position.

The Peking willow 'Tortuosa' has good frost hardiness.

Water

The plant needs plenty of water. Do not allow the soil to dry out.

Care

- A slow-release fertiliser can be used in spring. This releases the nutrients slowly and continuously so that the plant is evenly supplied over a longer period of time.
- Pruning wounds, saw cuts and broken branches should be treated with a wound sealant as soon as possible to prevent pathogens from entering the plant.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
