The Swiss willow (Salix helvetica) is a bushy, roundish, deciduous small shrub with decorative, lanceolate, silvery leaves. It also bears yellow flowers arranged in catkins from March to April. In a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, lime-free, acidic soil, it usually reaches a height of approx. 1 m and grows to a width of approx. 1.2 m.

Growth

Swiss willow is a bushy and rounded small shrub. It usually reaches a height of 0.3 - 1 m and is approx. 0.8 - 1.2 m wide.

Shoots

The shoots of Salix helvetica are tomentose, grey.

High leaf ornamental value. The deciduous leaves of the Swiss willow are silvery, lanceolate, alternate. They are about 3 - 4 cm in size. Swiss willow turns bright yellow in autumn.

Flower

The yellow flowers of Swiss willow appear in catkins from March to April.

Salix helvetica is a shallow-rooting plant.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

The Swiss willow has good frost hardiness.

Water

This plant has a low water requirement.

Care

- A slow-release fertiliser can be used in spring. This releases the nutrients slowly and continuously so that the plant is evenly supplied over a longer period of time.
- This plant should only be watered with lime-free water. Rainwater is particularly suitable for this purpose.
- If watered less frequently but thoroughly and thoroughly, the plant roots are encouraged to penetrate deeper layers of soil. This enables the plant to survive dry periods better.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
