The Ocean spray (Holodiscus discolor) is an upright, overhanging shrub with decorative fruits that stay on for a very long time. It produces creamy white flowers arranged in panicles from June to August. The Ocean spray also has egg-shaped, medium-green leaves. In a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, lime-free, nutrient-rich soil, it usually reaches a height of around 4 metres and grows to a width of around 3 metres.

Growth

Ocean spray is an upright and overhanging shrub. It usually reaches a height of 2 - 4 m and is approx. 2 - 3 m wide.

The deciduous leaves of the Ocean spray are medium green, ovate, alternate, lobed. They are about 2 - 7 cm in size. Ocean spray turns bright yellow in autumn.

Flower

The creamy white flowers of the Ocean spray appear in panicles from June to August.

Fruit

The fruits of Holodiscus discolor var. ariifolius are particularly decorative. Adhere for a very long time.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.
