The Crack willow (Salix fragilis) is a multi-stemmed, roundish small tree that produces yellow flowers arranged in catkins. They appear from April to May. The Crack willow also has shiny, lanceolate, dark green leaves. Its bark is dark grey and longitudinally furrowed. In a sunny, sheltered location with lime-free, moist to wet soil, it usually reaches a height of around 15 metres and grows to a width of around 15 metres.

Growth

Crack willow is a multi-stemmed and roundish growing small tree with a closed crown. It usually reaches a height of 10 - 15 m and is approx. 8 - 15 m wide. As a rule, it grows 30 - 40 cm per year.

Shoots

The shoots of Salix fragilis are smooth, green-yellow in colour.

The deciduous leaves of the Crack willow are dark green, lanceolate, glossy and alternate. They are about 10 - 12 cm tall. Crack willow turns bright yellow in autumn.

Bark

Dark grey, longitudinally furrowed bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The yellow flowers of Crack willow appear in catkins from April to May.

Root

Salix fragilis is a shallow-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms spreading, branching roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny, sheltered position.

Frost hardiness

The Crack willow has good frost hardiness.

Water

The plant needs plenty of water. Do not allow the soil to dry out.

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
