'Madame Stuart Low' is an elegant tree peony that brings a rich splash of color and refined form to the spring garden. It's a long-lived plant that, once established, can be a magnificent focal point for many decades.

Growth

This is a medium-strong growing, upright, and bushy deciduous shrub. It typically reaches a height of 1.0 - 1.5 m (3.3-5 ft) and a similar spread of 1.0 - 1.5 m (3.3-5 ft) wide. Tree peonies are known for their slow to moderate growth rate, especially when young, but their longevity makes them a worthwhile investment for the garden.

Leaf

Deciduous, the foliage is typically a fresh medium green, deeply divided into attractive leaflets.

Flower

The defining feature of 'Madame Stuart Low' is its large, semi-double to double flowers, which can measure around 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) in diameter. The petals are a beautiful salmon-pink to bright salmon-red, often with a subtle silvery edge and prominent purple basal patches at the center. These vibrant blooms appear in April to May, depending on your local climate, and are described as moderately fragrant.

Location

Prefers full sun to partial shade. Full sun generally encourages the most abundant and vibrant blooms. However, in hotter climates, some afternoon shade can help prevent the delicate petals from scorching and prolong the bloom time. Choose a site sheltered from strong winds to protect the large flowers and brittle woody stems. Protecting emerging buds from late spring frosts is also beneficial.

Frost hardiness

Good frost hardiness (USDA Zones 4-8, sometimes listed as 5b). Its woody stems allow it to reliably overwinter outdoors. In colder parts of Zone 4 or 5, applying a light mulch around the base or wrapping young plants in burlap during winter can offer extra protection.

Soil

Thrives in deep, fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soil. It is adaptable to a range of soil pH (from slightly acidic to slightly alkaline), but excellent drainage is crucial. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils, especially in winter, as this can lead to root rot.

Use

An outstanding specimen plant for perennial borders, cottage gardens, or as a commanding focal point in a mixed shrub planting. Its large, colorful blooms make it a dramatic and highly visible addition to any landscape.

Water

Medium water requirement. Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during dry spells and the plant's establishment phase. Established plants show some drought tolerance, but consistent moisture during the growing season is beneficial.

Care

Relatively low maintenance once established. Minimal pruning is typically needed; only remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Avoid cutting into old wood unnecessarily. Mulching around the base with organic material can help maintain soil moisture and protect the root zone. If the plant is grafted, ensure the graft union is planted 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) below the soil surface to encourage the tree peony to form its own root system. It's generally considered resistant to deer and rabbits.

Planting time

The ideal time to plant tree peonies is in autumn (September to November), as this allows the plant to establish its root system before winter. Early spring planting (March to April) is also possible before new growth fully emerges.
