'Beaute de Twickel' is a magnificent tree peony that brings an air of elegance and drama to the spring garden with its opulent blooms. It's a long-lived plant that can become a cherished centerpiece for decades.

Growth

This is a strong-growing, upright, and bushy deciduous shrub. It typically reaches a height of 1 - 2 m (3.3-6.5 ft) and a similar spread of 1 - 2 m (3.3-6.5 ft) wide. Its woody stems provide a permanent structure in the garden. Tree peonies are generally slow-growing, especially when young, but can live for 50-100 years or more.

Leaf

Deciduous, the leaves are relatively large, pinnately compound (divided into leaflets), and a fresh medium green color. In autumn, they may develop reddish-green tints before falling.

Flower

The highlight of 'Beaute de Twickel' is its exceptionally large flowers, measuring 16-30 cm (6-12 inches) in diameter. These blooms are typically carmine-red, often with a darker center, and are described as semi-double to nearly double. They appear in May to June, bringing a rich burst of color. The flowers are usually moderately fragrant.

Location

Prefers full sun to partial shade. Full sun generally promotes the best flowering, but some afternoon shade can help prolong the bloom time in hotter climates. Choose a site sheltered from strong winds to protect the large, delicate flowers. Early morning sun immediately after a frost should be avoided if possible, as it can damage emerging flower buds.

Frost hardiness

Very good frost hardiness (USDA Zones 4-8, sometimes listed as 5b). It reliably overwinters outdoors due to its woody stems.

Soil

Thrives in humus-rich, well-drained, fertile soil. It is adaptable to a range of soil pH, from slightly acidic to slightly alkaline, but good drainage is crucial. It dislikes consistently wet conditions, which can lead to root rot.

Location

An outstanding specimen plant for borders, cottage gardens, or as a focal point in a mixed shrub planting. Its large flowers and architectural form make it a dramatic addition to any landscape.

Water

Medium water requirement. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells and the establishment phase. Avoid overwatering.

Care

Relatively low maintenance once established. Little pruning is usually needed; only remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter or early spring. Avoid cutting into old wood unnecessarily. Mulch around the base to protect roots and maintain soil moisture. Tree peonies are often grafted onto herbaceous peony rootstock, and it's important to plant them deeply (with the graft union 10-15 cm / 4-6 inches below the soil surface) to encourage the tree peony to develop its own root system. It is generally resistant to deer.

Planting time

The best time to plant tree peonies is in autumn (September to November), as this allows the plant to establish its root system before winter. Early spring planting (March to April) is also possible before new growth fully emerges.
