Clematis paniculata is a striking evergreen climber endemic to New Zealand, highly valued for its profusion of large, pure white, star-shaped flowers that bloom in spring. Unlike its Asian counterpart often confused with it, this species features six petals (sepals) and a more leathery, persistent foliage, making it a distinctive ornamental vine.

Growth

A vigorous, woody, twining, evergreen climbing vine. It can reach 5-10 meters (16-33 feet) or more in height, scrambling through trees and shrubs.

Leaf

Features glossy, dark green, somewhat leathery leaves, typically divided into three broad, oval leaflets. Leaves are persistent (evergreen) in suitable climates.

Flower

Produces abundant, relatively large (5-10 cm / 2-4 inches), star-shaped, pure white flowers, typically with six prominent petals (sepals). Flowers are often solitary or in small clusters. It has a delicate fragrance. Blooms profusely in spring (August to November in New Zealand, typically March-May in Northern Hemisphere). Followed by attractive, feathery seed heads.

Location

Prefers full sun to partial shade. Benefits from its roots being kept cool and moist.

Frost hardiness

Moderate (USDA Zones 8-10 or 7 with protection), less hardy than Clematis terniflora. It thrives in mild, temperate climates.

Soil

Prefers fertile, moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Avoid waterlogged conditions.

Use

Ideal for training over pergolas, arbors, fences, or scrambling through large shrubs and trees where its evergreen foliage and spectacular spring bloom can be appreciated. A significant plant in New Zealand culture.

Water

Medium water requirement. Keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells.

Care

Low to medium maintenance. Requires support for climbing. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage fresh growth. Remove dead or damaged stems annually. Generally pest-free.

Planting Partners

The Sweet Autumn Clematis (or Panicled Clematis, referring to C. terniflora) creates beautiful accents when combined with:

- Astilbe (or False Spirea)
- Goat's Beard (or Tall Goatsbeard)
- Shield Fern

Planting time

Best planted in autumn or early spring.

Tasks

Apply compost: From November to December.
