The Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) is a dense, branched large shrub that produces white flowers. They appear from April to May. These produce blue-grey, round fruits from September. The Blackthorn also has matt, egg-shaped, dark green leaves. Its bark is black. In a sunny to semi-shady location with calcareous, nutrient-rich, loamy soil, it usually reaches a height of around 5 metres and grows to around 7 metres wide.

Growth

Blackthorn is a large shrub that grows densely and branches out. It usually reaches a height of 1 - 5 m and is approx. 1.5 - 7 m wide. It usually grows 30 - 50 cm per year.

Shoots

The shoots of Prunus spinosa are spiny.

The deciduous leaves of the Blackthorns are dark green, ovate, matt, alternate. They are about 3 - 5 cm in size. Blackthorn is bright yellow in autumn.

Bark

Black bark makes this plant an eye-catcher in any garden.

Flower

The white flowers appear from April to May. These grow to about 1 - 2 cm in size.

Fruit

The blue-grey drupes have a sweet and sour taste. The drupes are round. Ripening time from September.

Root

Prunus spinosa is a shallow-rooting plant and, depending on the soil, forms densely branched, runner-forming roots.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

Care
