The Hop hornbeam (Ostrya carpinifolia) is a roundish tree with decorative, light brown fruits. It produces yellow flowers arranged in catkins from the end of March to May. The Hop hornbeam also has egg-shaped, dark green leaves. In a sunny, sheltered location with calcareous, nutrient-rich, sandy soil, it usually reaches a height of around 20 metres and grows to a width of around 15 metres.

The shoots of Ostrya carpinifolia are olive green.

The deciduous leaves of Hop hornbeam are dark green, ovate, alternate, serrated. They are about 4 - 12 cm in size. Hop hornbeam is bright yellow in autumn.
