'Matrona' is an outstanding and highly popular upright sedum cultivar, renowned for its dark, stately stems and glossy, purple-flushed leaves. Its late-season bloom of dusty pink flowers provides significant architectural presence and extends garden interest into autumn and winter.

Growth

An upright, sturdy, clump-forming herbaceous perennial. Typically reaches 60-75 cm (24-30 inches) in height and 45-60 cm (18-24 inches) in spread.

Leaf

Succulent, oval-shaped, bluish-green leaves strongly flushed with purple or burgundy. Stems are also dark purplish-red.

Flower

Produces large, flat-topped clusters of tiny, star-shaped flowers that emerge dusty pink, maturing to a deeper rose. Blooms reliably from late summer through autumn (August to October).

Location

Thrives in full sun for the darkest foliage color and strongest stems. Tolerates light partial shade but may become leggy.

Frost hardiness

Excellent (USDA Zones 3-9), very cold-hardy.

Soil

Prefers well-drained, average to poor soil. Highly adaptable to various soil types but essential to have good drainage to prevent rot. Avoid overly rich or wet soils.

Water

Low water requirement. Extremely drought-tolerant once established.

Use

Ideal for perennial borders, rock gardens, containers, mass plantings, or as a striking specimen plant. Provides excellent vertical accent, fall interest, and winter structure with dried flower heads.

Care

Very low maintenance. Requires no significant pruning during the growing season. Cut back old flower stalks and foliage in late winter or early spring.

Planting time

Best planted in autumn or early spring.
