'Karfunkelstein' is a highly prized upright sedum cultivar, noted for its exceptionally dark, glossy, reddish-black foliage and striking late-season blooms. It brings bold color and architectural presence to gardens, offering dramatic contrast and extending visual appeal well into autumn.

Growth

Upright, clump-forming herbaceous perennial with sturdy, erect stems. Reaches 50-60 cm (20-24 inches) in height and 40-50 cm (16-20 inches) in spread, forming a dense mound.

Leaf

Succulent, oval to oblong, very dark reddish-black, almost black, with a notable sheen. This deep color holds well throughout the season.

Flower

Produces large, dense, flat-topped clusters (corymbs) of tiny, starry flowers. Flower buds are dark, opening to a deep ruby-red to purple-red. Blooms reliably from August to October, providing vital late-season nectar.

Location

Thrives in full sun for the darkest foliage color and best flowering.

Frost hardiness

Excellent (USDA Zones 3-9), very cold-hardy and adaptable.

Soil

Prefers well-drained, average to poor soil. Tolerates various soil types, including sandy or rocky; good drainage is essential to prevent root rot. Avoid overly rich or wet conditions.

Water

Low water requirement. Highly drought-tolerant once established, making it ideal for xeriscaping.

Use

Perfect for perennial borders, rock gardens, containers, mass plantings, or as a focal point. Its upright form and dark hue offer superb contrast and structure. Dried flower heads provide winter interest.

Care

Very low maintenance. No significant pruning needed during the growing season. Cut back old flower stalks and foliage in late winter or early spring.

Planting time

Best planted in autumn or early spring.
