This unique deciduous shrub is highly valued for its striking white, ghostly stems that provide exceptional winter interest, contrasting beautifully with its finely cut, fern-like foliage. It offers a delicate appearance despite its thorny nature, making it a distinctive addition to mixed borders or as a specimen plant.

Growth

An upright, arching, deciduous shrub with thorny, cane-like stems. It typically reaches 1.5-3 meters (5-10 feet) in height and 1.5-3 meters (5-10 feet) in spread, forming a thicket over time.

Leaf

Features elegant, pinnately compound, silvery-grey-green foliage with a white, felty underside. The leaves are finely cut and fern-like, providing a delicate texture.

Flower

Produces small, inconspicuous, rose-pink to purplish-pink flowers in clusters along the stems. Blooms in late spring to early summer (May-June), followed by small, inedible, black berries.

Location

Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Full sun enhances stem color and keeps the plant denser.

Frost hardiness

Excellent (USDA Zones 5-9), very cold-hardy.

Soil

Adapts to a wide range of well-drained soils, including sandy, loamy, or clay, but prefers moist conditions.

Water

Has a medium water requirement. Tolerates some drought once established but benefits from consistent moisture.

Use

Ideal for winter interest in borders, woodland edges, naturalistic plantings, or as a specimen plant to highlight its unique stems. Can be used for informal hedging where its thorns are advantageous.

Care

Low maintenance. Best stem color is on new wood, so prune hard in late winter or early spring (February-March) by cutting old canes to the ground to encourage fresh growth. Wear gloves due to thorns.

Planting time

Best planted in autumn or early spring.
